Role of Mathematics in 11th and 12th Commerce & Humanities stream: By Gunjan Khatkar

Just the way vitamin, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fats have their importance in the human body Mathematics has its value in commerce and humanities stream.

Subjects like economics, accounts & business studies use multiple concepts of mathematics. Not only in +1 and +2 but afterwards in graduation it is one of the basic criteria to get enroll in multiple universities and courses.

Economics, business studies and accounts being the main subjects in the commerce & humanities stream uses various applications of mathematics such as matrices, permutations and combinations, percentage, ratios, differentiation and integration, algebra, ratios, percentages, profit and loss statement. So we can say that overall, mathematics is necessary for commerce rather than being optional.

• At the time of filling entrances for BBA (bachelor of business administration), there were many colleges and universities which requires a minimum score (50%-60% or maybe more) in mathematics (12th Boards) as a compulsory eligibility criterion.

• Like for pursuing BMS, BBE, BFIA there is an entrance test named JAT, students who are having above 60% marks in mathematics in the 12th board can only apply for that. This minimum eligibility criteria changes every year, also there is some percentage of relaxation for SC, ST and OBC students.

• Entrance examinations like CLAT get a helping hand in scoring a good rank if the student has mathematics as one of their subjects.

• Also there are certain numbers of seats in universities like PU are reserved for the students who have mathematics in commerce or humanities stream.

• Also, if students want to pursue B. Com honours from Delhi University, they need mathematics or business mathematics as a subject in their curriculum in 12th. Otherwise, they can do B. Com.

• The graduation programmes like BCA, B.Com (Honours), BBA, B.A. (Fashion Communication), B.B.A (Hons), B.B.M (Bachelor of Business Management), B.Com (Honours), B.Com (Professional ), B.Com (Financial Accounting), B.Com (Banking & Insurance), B.M.S., B.Sc (Business Computing and Information Systems), BA (Honours) Marketing & Advertising Management, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Hotel Management, B. Com (Accounting & Finance) BAF are some of the graduation options for the students who have mathematics as one of the subjects in commerce or humanities stream.
