5 bad study habits that get in the way of your child's learning

06 Jan,2022

Not every study habit can work well. As a parent to a young child, you need to make sure your kid(s) is learning correctly. Here are 5 study habits that get in the way of your child's learning.

Every parent strives to provide the best education possible for their children. They aspire that their children achieve great academic success, which in turn would mold them into better professionals. However, not every child might be able to achieve tremendous success in academics, which could be a cause of concern for parents.
Despite referring to the same set of study material as the toppers, everything ultimately narrows down to effective study habits. Topper has compiled a list of 5 key habits that may be getting in the way of your child’s academic growth.

1. Lack of planning
Students who do not plan their studies well are likely to struggle in achieving their academic goals. As a parent, you should help your child craft a study plan that should outline the outcome of a particular learning session. Help them set goals for every study session.
Planning out their studies will make their learning sessions more productive.
It will also instil a sense of accountability to fulfil their targets before the study session ends.

2. Children do not make notes of key topics
Students might be overwhelmed by the magnitude of their syllabus. It could be difficult for them to retain and recall the entire learning while revising in the closing days before the exam.
Students tend to ignore the note-making concept in the initial learning phase, which further leads to a stressed learning practice.

Parents should guide their children about the importance of making short notes. They could present them with the different note-making techniques and help them decide the best option.
Students should be encouraged to make comprehensive notes on every chapter that they study and maintain them in separate subject folders. These notes turn handy during revision, just before the exam.

3. Hesitancy to clear doubts
Many students shy away from getting their doubts resolved while in school. This could be attributed to a lack of confidence in them. Moreover, the large number of students in a classroom makes it practically impossible for teachers to resolve the queries of every student.
However, parents should explain the importance of getting doubts resolved to students.
Additionally, they should instill confidence in their children to speak up and ask questions. Once children get into a habit of instant doubt resolution, they are bound to stay unstuck during the revision process.

4. No results despite hours of studies
Your child might be spending maximum hours in a day on the study table. Despite that, they might not be able to garner the desired results that you expect.
This could be due to a lack of understanding of your child’s learning habits.
Figure out the time when your child’s productivity is at its peak. For instance, some children might be able to retain better while studying early in the morning.
Similarly, some students might have a productive learning and retention session at night. This helps them make the most use of the time at hand.

5. Not learning from mistakes
Successful students are the ones who learn from their mistakes and ensure that they avoid committing the same mistake again.
Of course, failure is a stepping stone to success. A student who fails to learn from mistakes is simply delaying success.
If your child performs poorly in any of their exams, it’s better to encourage them to not give up.
Try to analyse and help your child understand that failure leads to success if directed the right way. Explain to them their weaknesses and curate a plan to work on their shortcomings for the next exam.

Additionally, parents should strongly back their children when it comes to education. Parents’ encouragement is needed the most when students are undergoing a dip in their academic performance.
